The Arms Trade Treaty Secretariat goes to Geneva – Switzerland

Geneva.jpgCancun / Mexico,  States parties to the Arms Trade Treaty to regulate the international arms trade have agreed to allocate the secretariat of the body by majority vote to Geneva – Switzerland.

The decision has been welcomed by many states and campaigners as the agreements reached, on other issues included how to finance the secretariat of the ATT. The still pending issue is on transparency on arms sales, whether countries would agree on transparency rules for publishing arms sales. Nevertheless, it is great to recognise also the role played by civil society organisation under the direction of Control Arms for this achievement.

Africa has been honored and challenged to lead this important body for the first year in Geneva by the nomination of South African’s interim director.  The fact that 13 African countries have ratified the ATT - including 11 ECOWAS countries proves more work need to be done in the region to support the secretariat for the future implementation of the Treaty.
